The Health Benefits Of Egg Yolks

Poached, boiled or scrambled - they're EGGCELLENT!

Did you know that the protein in eggs have a biological value of 100? This makes them one of the BEST sources of protein on earth! A biological value of 100 means that 100% of the protein in eggs can be used for protein synthesis, compared to a biological value of ~70 for plant proteins. An average egg has 6 grams of protein and packs in all 9 essential amino acids, making them a complete protein source.

To many people's surprise almost half of this protein is actually in the egg YOLK and not just the egg white. The egg yolk is a nutrient powerhouse and provides a generous amount of folate, selenium and vitamin B12 (just to name a few). As can be seen via the infographic above, egg whites are a convenient, fat-free source of protein which is why they have become so popularised! Unfortunately, this is their main redeeming quality and they lack the same nutritional content compared to the yolk.

Given their high protein, moderate fat content and versatility in the kitchen, eggs are the perfect food for satisfying hunger and providing nutrients simultaneously. We know that nutrition is more than just calories and protein, so try adding a whole egg to your egg whites in future!
